What are items with this nomenclature?
These items are used to allow light into a closed area of a "military" vehicle or a controlled space in buildings or specialized mobile equipment. They are mostly used on military style applications.
Why are these items so heavy?
In general they start about 2" thick and range to 7 1/4" thick. They are mostly glass. They are used to protect the person(s) in the vehicle or other work space from stray or intentional small arms fire. By their nature, these units will be very heavy. They continue to let light into the intended space after fracture upon impact of a projectile. Remember this when compiling costs. Each has a different weight.
When was this style device first used by the government en-masse?
We have blueprints that date back to 1943. These are routinely purchased. A "modern" block could be or would be LASER hardened.
